This sermon was preached at Abundant Life Christian Center in Meductic, New Brunswick, on December 16, 2007. "What hath God wrought!" is taken from Number 23:23, where Balaam is lifted into prophetic exclamation as he looks upon redeemed Israel. "For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favor unto them." (Psalm 44:3) This message parallels Israel's national salvation with the Christian salvation put forward in Ephesians 2, that salvation is of GOD, and not of man. Good sermon, Eli. A couple things though:
It is true that Utah is the most depressed state in the US. It is also true that Utah is a center for meth use and trafficking. Suicide rates are among the highest here too, especially among young males. But let me play the Mormon’s advocate:
First, while the above facts are…well, facts, they don’t quite tell the whole story. Mormons will note that as a Mormon’s devoutness to their faith increases, they are at very low risk of depression, suicide, and drug use.
Second, it is not true that Utah has the highest abortion ratio (if you have an article attesting otherwise, please share the link). In fact, from what I could find online, both Utah and Idaho have the lowest abortion rates in the country.
Let me know when you’re free and in Logan. I’d love to talk to you more about Mormonism. I’ve got several books/documentaries on the religion that I think you’d find interesting.
I’m glad we find common-cause against Mormonism, Eli. But let’s not forget that our agendas are diametrically opposed. No matter though—it makes for interesting discussion. Or, if we’ve exhausted the subject of religion, we could just play Halo (or whatever it is you do for fun haha).
